Interested in strengthening advocacy skills, making and sustaining valuable contacts, and expanding your knowledge and insight regarding international women’s issues?

Our annual 2014 UN Practicum in Advocacy at the United Nations is a great way to get more experience and delve into the core of Women’s issues. You’ll get a chance to attend the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), held at UN headquarters in New York City! This year’s theme is Challenges and achievements in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals for women and girls.”

Are you ready to learn about these important issues through workshops and meetings? Tuition of $1499 will include access to the CSW, accommodation, food, program materials, and a cultural event. Apply by November 1, 2013 at 5 pm EST to secure your spot. For more information, view our Practicum 2013 page.

Advocate at the UN

1) When: March 8 – March 15, 2014

2) Where: UN Headquarters in New York City

3) Who: Undergraduate, graduate, and professional students from across the nation

4) Why attend: Strengthen your skill-set in advocacy, increase your knowledge of international women's issues, and gain valuable contacts and insight into UN processes

5) What you have to do: Submit an application by November 1, 2013 at 5 p.m. and then raise money to attend

6) Cost: $1499 covers cost of lodging, food, program materials, registration and entrance to CSW, NGO preparatory meeting, membership to the Y-WILPF (the young women’s caucus of WILPF), and daily briefings from faculty and other experts.

The Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) and the Center for Women's Health and Human Rights at Suffolk University (CWHHR) are offering the opportunity for college and university students to attend the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) meetings at the United Nations in New York from March 8 - March 15, 2014.

The CSW is dedicated exclusively to gender equality and the advancement of women. Representatives from member states gather to identify problems and issues affecting women internationally. CSW meetings are typically attended by thousands of women affiliated with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from around the world. Alongside the official discussions and reports, these NGOs sponsor hundreds of "side events" such as panels, workshops and performances addressing local and international issues affecting women.

The 2014 priority theme of the CSW is “Challenges and achievements in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals for women and girls.”  The Commission will also evaluate progress in the implementation of the agreed conclusions from its fifty-fifth session on ““Access and participation of women and girls to education, training, science and technology, including for the promotion of women’s equal access to full employment and decent work””. Students participate as delegates of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, and contribute to the official documentation of both official and informal meetings. This program is open to women enrolled at any college or university in the United States, and provides ample opportunities for peer-to-peer learning and exploring career opportunities in international relations and advocacy work.

Students interested in being a part of the college and university women's delegation are urged to apply. Students should also identify a faculty member from their home institution who will help negotiate collaboration between WILPF/NWSA/CWHHR and the student's college or university.

The tuition for the Practicum is $1499, which includes lodging offered on a multiple occupancy basis. The tuition fee will cover all meals, lodging, registration and entrance to the CSW, NGO preparatory meetings, program materials, membership to Y-WILPF (the young women's caucus of WILPF) and daily briefings from faculty and other experts. (The fee does not include transportation to New York City or public transportation during the week's stay). Limited scholarship funding is available and students are encouraged to raise money on their campuses and in their home communities to support their attendance.

The US Supreme Court is scheduled to hear Opening Arguments on Tuesday, Oct. 8th in the case of McCutcheon v the FEC. This case provides the next extension of the Citizens United case, allowing the pro-corporate Court the opportunity to rule in favor of Shaun McCutcheon, an Alabama billionaire who supports conservative candidates. McCutcheon has claimed that the $123,000 limit on individual contributions to candidates is an infringement of his First Amendment rights.  If the Court agrees, it will threaten campaign finance law and the delicate balance of power that keeps our form of government working.

The WILPF Corporations v Democracy Issue Committee is asking for WILPF members throughout the country to protest, write letters to the editor and do whatever they can to raise the media reporting and public awareness of this dangerous case and its threat to the promise of democracy. Take photos of yourselves carrying signs, station yourselves on the steps of your state Capitol or US Court House, and in general 'act up' to gain attention of the media and your neighbors. This decision portends the next and final phase of government for sale.

Here are two articles with more information:

If you google McCutcheon v FEC you will find even more information and talking points.

WILPF US National Board ad hoc Bylaws Committee

As WILPF US members come together in various ways, we are looking to define a vision and structure for the future. Two current venues are the regional meetings and the Membership Development Committee conference calls. Another, working along with these processes, is the ongoing work of the National Board ad hoc Bylaws Committee. Originally organized by the board and composed of long-time and newer general members and board members with an interest in promoting good governance to encourage a thriving activist membership, the Bylaws Committee is soliciting member input and questions on the Bylaws Discussion Board located on this website and via email (send those emails to bylawreview@wilpfus.org).

As we look at ways to reform and clarify our bylaws, we want to do it within the framework of how members envision WILPF US. Our bylaws are the governing document setting forth the way the organization functions. Our bylaws define the structure that clarifies process: how the parts work together, and the roles of the members, whether serving on the national board, or working together in the branches or committees and in our basic role as members, the stakeholders of our organization. As a membership organization – a nonprofit membership corporation – our bylaws are also where our member rights are defined and protected. So, while bylaws may seem rather dry, they actually can serve to provide a structure that facilitates the work that we, as members, carry out in the world through WILPF US.

As we consider ways to modify and enhance our bylaws, we on the Bylaws Committee are looking for members to let us know what items and/or issues are important and should be addressed. We would also like to know what questions members may have. Both types of input will help us greatly in the goal of achieving a smoother functioning of our organization while addressing the changes and challenges we face.

By Carol Urner, DISARM/End Wars with WILPF Reaching Critical Will

Click image to be taken to the ican site.

On September 26 US President Obama did not attend the United Nations summit on nuclear weapons disarmament as so many in the peace community have been urging him to do. The USA did launch an (unarmed) Minuteman III nuclear missile on that very same day despite our efforts to halt the test . But all in all it was a wonderful week at the United Nations as we moved closer to the nuclear weapons abolition which we seek. May we continue building momentum  now that October has begun.

The missile test we protested may have looked to the rest of the world like the Pentagon was thumbing its nose at the billions who want to ban nuclear weapons from the earth, but at least the test reminded us of the continuing nuclear danger which we must end before it ends us. We shared the story of Colonel Petrov, who saved the world in 1961, and felt thankful for all the men and women working through the decades to make our world nuclear free.

And the High Level meeting on nuclear disarmament  did take place as planned and  WILPF Reaching Critical Will already has results posted for us to see.

Presidents, Prime Ministers and Foreign Ministers were there from almost every nation in the world  including all of the nuclear weapons possessors except Israel. The US, France and Britain repeated their position that meetings like this were a distraction, but take time to browse the statements and you will find the overwhelming message that the world wants to move much more quickly to abolish nuclear weapons. Be sure to read the statements of the two NGO representatives from I-CAN and the AFSC and watch the I-CAN video  calling for a ban treaty to start us on our way.

At the same time US Secretary of State supported the Chemical Weapons Ban Treaty and met with the Security Council on destroying  Syria’s supply and facilities. He  also met with the President of Iran on straightening out problems with nuclear weapons there.

What a great day! It should give us heart for the long road still ahead.

by MacGregor Eddy and Carol Urner, DISARM/End Wars Issue Committee

In the very early hours of Thursday morning, September 26—the very day of the United Nations summit meeting on nuclear disarmament—the Pentagon is scheduled to launch a Minuteman III nuclear missile toward the Marshall Islands.

It will carry no warhead, but may be meant to carry a message to Iran, Syria, North Korea and the world that the US is ready to use nuclear weapons to enforce its will. Deliberate or not, September 26 is not only the UN nuclear disarmament summit, it is also the 30thanniversary of the day a Russian Colonel saved the world from Nuclear Holocaust.

We are asking all WILPFers and their friends  to please call the White House or send an email (action form - don't forget to sign your own name to the letter) this Wednesday or even on Thursday. And let us dedicate our own actions and the day of 9/26 to the memory of Colonel Petrav.

This is not the time for  nuclear threats or military options. This is the time to begin negotiations and enter the paths to abolition of nuclear and all other weapons of mass destruction. This is the time to begin taking steps that can put an end to war.

Send an email to President Obama here and tell him to stand for peace! Don't forget to sign your own name to the letter.

By Nancy Price, Earth Democracy Issue Group Member and Emily Busam, WILPF US and Earth Democracy Summer Intern

WILPF US co-convened the Earth Democracy Conference at the Democracy Convention, Madison, WI, Aug. 7-11. The major theme was that we need to urgently collaborate nationally and internationally to build a global movement for People, Peace and the Planet, based on the principle of Guardianship for Future Generations and on human, civil, labor and earth rights not corporate rights that will lead to green economic transformation. The Earth Democracy session videos are available to watch here. You can also view videos from the conference on the Alliance for Democracy YouTube channel.

Young Poets and their Teachers at an afternoon Earth Democracy Conference Session

By Emily Busam

At the Convention, WILPF members had the honor of meeting young poets and their teachers at the afternoon session titled “When Inquiry & Collaboration Take On Earth Justice in Elementary and High School Classrooms,” organized by Susan Freiss, Madison WILPF, with two teacher colleagues. These third graders channeled their creativity and enthusiasm for the oceans into a book of poetry entitled A New Thought on Blue: An Ocean Poem Anthology.  This work emerged from a shared reading of Life in the Ocean:The Story of Oceanographer Sylvia Earle and expanded to organizing a community drive to ban plastic bags, writing and publishing the book of poetry, and collaborating with a high school media class to make a movie on the topic. The students talk about this project and read their poems here.

The students’ teacher, Erica Krug, said that the project helped students connect their actions to the health and vitality of the oceans, a lesson of which we could all be reminded. In fact, a short report this week served as a reminder of how our reliance on fossil fuels threatens life underwater as well.  The Turtle Island Restoration Network (TIRN) and The Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) are warning of the destructive effects of the massive fracking gas, coal and other industrial projects planned for Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. The industrialization of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area will destroy and degrade critical nesting, feeding or migration habitat for six marine turtle species of international value.

These little poets have an intuitive sense of the consequences of human action on our ecosystems. One child, 9-year-old Margot, wrote a poem entitled “Extinction”, which illuminates children’s capacity to think and feel deeply. The poem goes as follows:

Pollution killing,

Plastic bags destroying,

Extinction will come.

We can’t do it alone.

We need help.

If you are interested in reading more poems included in this anthology, the book is available to purchase online (search by Title).  All proceeds go to Sylvie Earle’s organization called Mission Blue, which is working to protect areas of the ocean called “hope spots”.

Summer Reflections

By Emily Busam

I am ending my summer internship at WILPF, during which I worked with the Earth Democracy Issue Group and assisted Ria in the national office. I learned about this internship by happenstance.  I was researching water issues for a university project and was put in contact with Nancy Price, whom I had never met before. I felt very engaged by my conversations with Nancy and wanted to learn more about WILPF and the Earth Democracy Issue Group.  I applied for an Earth Democracy/Administrative Assistant Internship, and months later, here I am, sitting at the WILPF office in Boston, writing to you about my experiences as an intern for that very same position for which I applied.

The highlight of my internship was attending the Democracy Convention in Madison, WI, for which WILPF was a national sponsor. The convention included nine conferences: Earth Democracy, Race & Democracy, Constitutional Reform, Democratizing Defense, Economic Defense, Media Democracy, Education for Democracy, Local Democracy, and Representative Democracy. I had the opportunity to attend sessions for these conferences and to share my thoughts, reactions and newly acquired knowledge on the WILPF blog.  I was blown away by the high-caliber group of speakers and inspired by the enthusiasm and commitment of conference participants.

I also enjoyed attending the Wing Farm Gathering in Vermont, where I met some of the brilliant and dynamic women of WILPF. Members gave presentations on their areas of work and knowledge, which provoked stimulating thought and discussion.

My days in the office have been equally enriching and informative.  Ria has been a wonderful resource and has patiently taught me the ins-and-outs of the office. I have learned how stressful it can sometimes be to successfully operate a national, membership-based organization. I have also learned the necessity of completing routine tasks in a timely fashion for an organization’s smooth functioning.  Finally, I learned the importance of balancing a business mentality with personal concerns for fellow WILPF members, which can sometimes be a tricky dance.

Some of what I learned was difficult to confront, but it challenged me to think critically about social and environmental issues and to deeply consider my place within the realm of peace work.  As I read and worked during my internship, I more clearly understood the intractable cycles that create suffering. While my realizations grew, I experienced a classic struggle between idealism and pragmatism. My ideals were continually put in check, which is necessary and positive, because idealism quickly leads to burnout.

Inspired by my insights from this summer, I’m taking some time off from school and work with the intention of self-reflecting and self-educating. I’ve traveled extensively during the past few years, going from place to place, and regularly transitioning.  I’m realizing that I need to make some space to fully absorb and analyze my experiences.  I’m planning on educating myself on topics that I would not have the opportunity to explore within the constraints of my studies at school.  I also need to reflect on how I can create a lifestyle that does not compromise my beliefs and values.  Although my idealism has been put in check, I’d like to believe that humans have enormous capacity for good, and I’d like to create meaningful work that realizes humanity’s potential.

Top photo: A heartwarming session about one classroom project to engage youth in environmental activism. These little girls and their teacher, along with their entire third grade class, wrote and published a book of poetry that expresses their passionate interest in the health of our water and oceans. The book, titled 'A New Thought On Blue: An Ocean Poem Anthology', is available for purchase online.
