Date: August 3, 2014

Subject: Water Local

WOMEN’S INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE FOR PEACE & FREEDOM UNITED STATES SECTION THIRTY-SECOND TRIENNIAL CONGRESS DETROIT, MICHIGAN August 3, 2014

Resolution passed unanimously by voice vote

Whereas, water is essential to life and is a human right recognized by the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights,

Whereas, the City of Detroit has cut off water to over 120,000 households affecting approximately 300,000 residents, approximately 45% of the population,

Whereas, water shutoffs can put families at risk of losing their children or elderly family members to the custody of the Michigan Department of Human Services,

Whereas, water shutoffs can lead to homes being condemned and residents evicted,

It has come to our attention that contrary to published reports, water is not being restored,

Therefore the members of the 32nd Triennial Congress of Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, United States Section, demand Detroit Water and Sewage Department implement the original 2005 Detroit Water Affordability Program, and not privatize this public resource.

Turn on the water!

To be sent to Mike Duggan, Mayor of Detroit United Nations, Geneva, Human Rights Council United Nations, New York City Pope Francis Cc: to Michigan Welfare Rights Organization
