Jane Addams Branch Explores a Transformative Vision to Abolish International War

Good news! Could we at last put an end to wars between nations? The answer is yes, and on June 18, the Jane Addams branch will explore a compelling explanation of why and how. The presentation will explain and illustrate how all WILPF branches can share in spreading this very good news by throwing “peace treaty petition parties.”

From its inception, WILPF—the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom—has understood that war easily makes the top five list of evils humans commit. WILPF is a champion dedicated to the search for peace, and ending international warfare is a means to avoid the varied evils of maintaining standing armies and creating ever more devastating weapons.

This branch meeting will highlight Project Enduring Peace (PEP) and its singular goal to secure an updated or new international peace treaty. We know the global community longs to live in peace. Several times in the last century, world leaders gathered and wrote treaties or other agreements in the hope of ending wars, both civil and international. For several reasons, unfortunately, the time to achieve success then was not right. Since then, however, this presentation will touch on many key things in this century that have changed to favor success.

A video will introduce the concept of “peace systems,” explaining what they are, how they are formed, and how they would work to keep the peace. The video also refutes the widespread but false belief that war is an inescapable human trait. That belief is a self-fulfilling prophecy that feeds the war industry.  Just as there is during all “peace-treaty parties,” there will be an opportunity to sign a petition urging world leaders to get to work on a new, and this time, enforceable, treaty.

WILPF, with its many branches in the US and internationally, is beautifully positioned to spread knowledge of the potential of a global peace system far and wide. Working together on this hopeful cause would unify and energize the entire WILPF community.
