Public Comment Opportunity: Plutonium Pit Production Environmental Review

A federal judge recently ruled that the Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) violated the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) by failing to analyze the nationwide environmental impacts of new plutonium pit production. This decision resulted from a lawsuit by Tri-Valley CAREs, Savannah River Site Watch, and Nuclear Watch New Mexico. Now, the NNSA is preparing a programmatic environmental impact statement (EIS) for plutonium pit production, which will assess impacts at multiple sites and consider associated waste management and transportation activities.

To participate, submit your written comments on the draft EIS or request to join the distribution list. Email your comments or questions to PitPEIS@nnsa.doe.gov, or mail them to the following address:

Ms. Jade Fortiner, NEPA Document Manager
National Nuclear Security Administration, Office of Pit Production Modernization
U.S. Department of Energy
1000 Independence Ave., SW
Washington, DC 20585

For sample comments and virtual hearing dates, visit pitPEIS.com. Submit your public comments to the NNSA before midnight on July 16, 2026.

Take Action: Join the Global Campaign to Reduce Military Spending

Global Days of Action on Military Spending (GDAMS) is an international campaign launched in 2011 dedicated to reducing military spending and advancing peace. Organized by the Global Campaign on Military Spending (GCOMS) and the International Peace Bureau (IPB), GDAMS offers many ideas for participating in this campaign

WILPF US, as part of the People Over the Pentagon coalition, encourages members to urge their congressional representatives to cut military funding in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Find suggested language for your letters here.

WILPF US at the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference

Every five years, the United Nations reviews major treaties, including the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which is currently under review in New York City from April 27 to May 22. Five WILPF US members are participating in a larger WILPF delegation at the conference.

The Working Group on Disarmament has crafted a statement highlighting the perspectives of the Global South and youth worldwide, emphasizing the importance of adhering to all NPT articles. Our delegates are distributing this statement directly to diplomats at the review, and the online version is available for reference.

Stay informed by checking the Reaching Critical Will website for daily updates from the review conference. Follow the latest news and developments.
